Name: Il Poggione 2018 Rosso di Montalcino / Tuscany, Italy
Region:
TUSCANY

Country: ITALY

Il Poggione is one of the three founding producers of Brunello. Today it is a benchmark winery led by a father-son duo. This wine is a Rosso, which is a younger version of widely-known Brunello. It is well-structured but also very accessible; this wine is fresh in style, despite being aged both in a large cask and in bottle. It’s bright red and has a nose of cherry with some spice. On the palate it is juicy and vibrant with velvety tannins.

Bright red. Flint, ripe red cherry and sweet spices on the very ripe and forward but ultimately fresh nose. The sweet spice notes and a refined, austere mouthfeel are typical of the S.Angelo in Colle terroir. Closes juicy and fresh, with lively flavors of red cherry and more sweet spices, plus hints of underbrush. Ages one year in both used 30-50hL oak barrels and used barriques, then spends six months in bottle before being released for sale. Made from 15-year old vineyards. 91 Vinous

Name: Château Auzines 2018 Cuvée les Garrigues
Region: CORBIERES
Country: FRANCE

This wine is from a key red wine-making region in southern France, the Languedoc-Roussillon. The Chateau is at a higher altitude than others in the area providing the vineyards with sunny exposure during the day and a cooling effect at night, which helps the wine retain nice acidity. This wine embodies what a fine red wine from the Languedoc is all about: elegance, red fruit and the quintessential herbal notes from this region of thyme and sage.

An abundance of boisterous plums and cherries mingled with savoury olive and thyme notes. Close-textured and rewarding. 91 Decanter

Name: Bodega Lanzaga 'Lanzaga' Rioja 2014 by Telmo Rodriguez
Region: RIOJA
Country: SPAIN

Telmo approaches winemaking in Rioja just as he does in his other regions: seeking out the most remarkable terroirs, farming them with extreme diligence, and finding inspiration in the winery from the wisdom of the past masters. Tim Atkin has declared Telmo as one of the top ten producers of Rioja. This wine is riper than the previous vintage (due to the slightly warmer growing season) but it is structured and harmonious. It has aromas of redcurrants, cherries, chocolate and hints of oak. It is serious, medium-bodied and has a long finish.

A rich and dense red with deep and rich flavors of spice, smoked meat, mushrooms and berries. Medium to full body. Extremely long and creamy. Wonderful fruit and balance. Drink now. 96 James Suckling

Name: Dominique Piron 2016 Chénas Quartz
Region: BEAUJOLAIS
Country: FRANCE

Beaujolais sits beneath Burgundy and though in many cases it is overshadowed by its neighbor, Beaujolais itself has an riveting history – it is where the Romans first planted their vines thousands of years ago and it saw a period of Benedictine monks fostering its vineyards. Domaine Piron has ancestors that date back to the 1590’s. 14 generations in, Dominique is producing traditional wines that are inherently expressive of the terroir. This wine comes from steep, granitic parcels that give the wine a complex minerality. It is elegant with classic violet and red fruit notes; a fresh but pure and focused expression of Beaujolais.

One the series of great wines produced in Morgon by this producer, this bottling is one of the most accessible when young. The tannins are there but are already balanced by juicy black fruits. Rich and deliciously fresh, the wine will be ready from late 2020. 90 Wine Enthusiast
