Name:  Craggy Range 2016 Gimblett Gravels Syrah

New Zealand tends to deliver an under-the-radar, mid-weight expression of Syrah. Though plantings here are much lower than in other regions, these wines are attracting attention for showcasing the best aspects of both New World (fruit-forward) & Old Word (restrained & herbaceous) Syrah. The vines for this wine were brought to New Zealand roughly 150 years ago. This wine has an aromatic flare to it with floral, pepper and blueberry notes, but with nice concentration throughout the palate. There is powerful black fruit, fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long savoury finish.

This wine has received: 95 Wine Enthusiast, 92 Decanter

Name: Eberle 2017 Steinbeck Vineyard Syrah

Californian Rhone-style wines have really evolved over the past 50 years to evoke more consistent and unique expressions of Syrah. While they still tend to be more varied than their French counterpart, this freedom of expression allows for some really vibrant wines. This one is full-bodied and has excellent colour with chocolate espresso aromas. It has upfront tannins, rich fruit and hints of smoke and black pepper.

This wine has received: 90 Wine Spectator, 94 Tasting Panel, 91 Wilfred Wong

Name: Shaw + Smith 2017 Shiraz

Australian Shiraz has a reputation for inky and jammy wines with dominant oak flavour. Shaw + Smith, the cousin team behind one of the country’s most impressive wineries has been producing a new wave, cool-climate Shiraz in the Adelaide Hills region. This balanced wine is medium-bodied with a dark fruit core and its liquorice and pepper fragrance is reminiscent of Northern Rhone spice.

This wine has received: 98 Decanter, 97 James Halliday Wine Companion
